IRS Filing
We just learned of a new IRS Filing in a release in US Today that will be of interest to many of our guild members. I have copied the article for you below. Please take note and contact your board about this new IRS Filing.
UPDATE: From HQN member Carol Lewis...for the year 2010 (filing in 2011) if the Guild has
less than $50,000 in gross receipts, they are only required to file the
e-post card (990-N) instead of form 990-EZ or form 990.
The information on the Members Only page ("Where Quilting Intersects
with Law" by Nancy Ogle - 2005) is pretty correct through
2009. And, the filing required by May 17 is not a new filing - that is
the deadline for the usual filing of the e-post card form 990-N or the
forms 990-EZ or 990.
All tax exempts have to file an annual information return, depending on
their gross receipts. This filing is always due May 15 of each year and
the new rule says if you don't do this annual filing for 3 consecutive
years you will automatically lose tax exemption. Then you have to
re-file for exemption and pay the fees again, which have been increased
substantially ($850). In addition, you may have to pay income tax on
profits until your new exemption is received. For a chart
that shows this information visit http://www.irs.gov/charities/article/0,,id=184445,00.html
Thousands of non-profits could unwittingly lose
tax status
By Sandra Block, USA TODAY, May 14, 2010
Hundreds of thousands of small non-profits, from Little League teams to
community soup kitchens, could lose their tax-exempt status on Monday
because of an IRS filing requirement.
The 2006 Pension Protection Act included a provision requiring all
non-profits to file an annual return with the IRS.
Previously, non-profits with annual revenue of less than $25,000 were
excluded. Non-profits that fail to file a return for three consecutive
years lose their tax-exempt status. On May 17, the three-year clock
runs out for non-profits that haven't filed a return since 2007.
The Urban Institute estimates that up to 365,000 non-profits could lose
their tax-exempt status if they fail to file by Monday. Groups that
miss the deadline will have to apply for a new exemption and pay a user
fee of up to $850. They could also be liable for taxes on any revenue
earned before their exemption is renewed.
The requirement does not apply to churches or church-related operations.
Donors won't feel the impact right away, says Sarah Hall Ingram, IRS
commissioner for tax exempt and government entities. When a non-profit
loses its tax exemption, the IRS is required to issue a public notice.
Until the notice is published, she says, donations to the organization
are still deductible. The IRS doesn't plan to publish the names of
non-profits that lose their exemption until January, Ingram says, "So
if somebody gives between now and when the name gets on the public
list, the donor is protected."
Non-profits with less than $25,000 in annual revenue can file a 990-N,
an abbreviated online form. Completing the online form takes less than
10 minutes, says Tim Delaney, president of the National Council of
Nonprofits.
The IRS has conducted an extensive campaign to educate non-profits, but
many small charities are still unaware of the requirement, says Tom
Pollak, senior research associate for the Urban Institute. "Filing to
the IRS has never been on their radar screen."

Quilt Guild's Support the Kansas Quilt Project
The Kansas Quilt project is an initiative
to document Kansas quilts by making the findings available on the
Internet through the Quilt Index, a webpage sponsored by Michigan State
University and the Alliance for American Quilts. During the
1980s they collected photographs and information on 13,000 quilts and
presented information on a selected few through exhibits and a book.
Technology has changed and the Project wants to join other projects such as the Quilts of Tennessee and the Kentucky Quilt Project by making all the information available to researchers on the Internet. Currently the Project has raised over $4,000 from a generous grant from Wichita's Prairie Quilt Guild to pay for data processing of the information. Another $1,500 was needed for scanning equipment. A private donor offered the project $1,000 if they could come up with the another $500. Kaw Valley Quilters Guild has donated the $500 to the project.
To find out more about the project, contact Barbara Brackman, bbrackman@sunflower.com or 785-843-5100.

Quilts Needed For Safehome
Jane Bonuchi an employee of SAFEHOME, is
the assistant to the Capital Campaign committee. SAFEHOME is the only
domestic violence shelter in Johnson County; the exact location is
confidential. They have just recently moved into a new and much larger
location where for the first time clients have separate rooms and
private bathrooms! The shelter has, children’s playrooms, playground,
therapy rooms, counseling rooms, large dining area, kitchen, laundry
area, etc. It is quite exciting. They are requesting an on-going supply
of twin or trundle quilts so that the clients may take their quilt when
they go on to their new lives. The trundle size is just as long as the
twin but not quite as wide, approximately 45" by 72".
Jane’s phone # is 913-768-0305 or SAFEHOME can be reached at
913-432-9300 -- ask for Janee' Hanzlik regarding quilt donations.
Lakota Star Quilts Project
Here is a service project for any quilter or quilt guild. The Lakota
Indians of South Dakota use Traditional Star Quilts to celebrate
important functions in their community life. They use them for
ceremonies, as gifts, or as saleable items. Fabric for these quilts is
very difficult to obtain due to lack of shops and transportation.
The Second Baptist Church of Liberty, Missouri is coordinating an
ongoing effort to collect fabric to be taken to the Cheyenne River
Reservation of South Dakota. The contact person is Kathleen Kesner at
816-792-5532. The address of the church is 309 E. Franklin Street,
Liberty MO 64068.
What can you do? For these people fabric is worth more than cash. They
use the following fabrics for their quilts: solids, smaller calicos,
bridal satin, and background fabrics (no polyester fabrics please).
Please don’t send scraps or anything smaller than ¼ yard cuts. They do
not use large florals, batiks, or modern prints; think traditional and
you will do fine. You will need to get the fabric to the church. They
will get it to the reservation on routine trips.
If you have any questions, you can call Kathleen Kesner or Nancy Wakefield
at 816-858-3670.
